Arrest mugshots appropriated from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department. Each image submitted to a facial detection algorithm that returns confidence intervals of the subject's primary emotion. Of the 5,012 images collected over a two month period, these are the 18 subjects that the API calculated were 100% happy.
The collector is offered a series of rare images no longer publicly available as mugshots are deleted from the Maricopa County Sherrif's Department's website after three days.
The viewer is invited to judge the contrast between a sometimes elated expression and the subject's unfortunate circumstances, in a composition that is legally permissible (the images are in the public domain) but ethically ambiguous.
